Hightail Hotshot’s Trailer Brakes Part 2 - Manual Control
Hot shot Pro Tip on using the Manual Lever on your Brake Controller for Safety.
You likely have used the lever on your trailer brake controller to set the gain after hitching-up. Did you know it’s handy for safety as well?
When towing in the winter you may need to stop on ice. When travelling downhill you could have your trailer tires break loose. If you’re not careful your trailer could jackknife and hit your truck.
The Drag Chain
In some US mountain passes not only are chains required on the tow vehicle, but they require one trailer tire to be chained. This is called a drag chain.
- The benefit of the drag chain is it creates enough resistance that it keeps your trailer straight. The same results can be obtained by lightly manually activating your trailer brakes with that little lever.
- Another advantage on ice, is by using the drag from your trailer. You don’t risk locking your truck brakes, and thus losing steering control.
- Similarly, if the weight on your trailer is heavier on the back axle, and you develop sway, or if wind or a windy road starts, your trailer swaying you can use this same trick.
So, for safety’s sake, remember to use that Manual Brake Lever to avoid sway and jackknifing.
